Community Police

Community Police Store frontCommunity Policing was introduced to the Westfield Police Department in 1994 with one officer assigned to the area of Orange Street. Since then the philosophy has grown into a unit with five officers under the command of a sergeant. Although there is a community police unit within the police department, community policing is a department wide philosophy.

At its core, community policing is a philosophy which embraces the idea of problem solving. By cultivating partnerships with businesses, residents, politicians, civic organizations, and anyone else willing to contribute, officers are able to identify issues before they become problematic. Officers are then able to work together with community members to pinpoint solutions to the problems they identified together.

In 2016, the Westfield Police Department opened the Community Police Resource Center at 71 Elm Street. Five officers are assigned to the Center, and it is staffed with volunteers Monday through Friday afternoons to assist community members with police and other matters. This is the center for operations which include community outreach, trainings, and public information. Future plans for the Center include the availability of many other resources in addition to police services.
