Any citizen of the United States who is a resident of Massachusetts and will be 18 years of age on or before election day may register to vote. You must register at least 20 days before the election in which you plan to vote. Once registered it is not necessary to re-register as long as the voter is verified as a resident during the Annual City Census.

As of January 1, 2002 the number of registered voters was 22,298 and the number of residents from the City Census was 38,916.

Voting Precincts
The City Council establishes the voting precincts within the city. At present the city is divided into 12 voting areas. You must vote in the precinct in which you are registered. If you do not know your voting precinct, you may check the Residential Street Table listed below or call the Board of Registrars at the number listed above.

If you have recently moved within the city, notify the Board of Registrars of your address change before the final registration day. If your address has not been officially changed you must vote in your former precinct.
