The Westfield Fire Department is a municipal organization which provides fire, rescue and ambulance services to the City of Westfield. The department is staffed 24 hours a day by 97 fully paid personnel, including 80 who are specially trained to handle emergency medical calls. There are three staffed fire stations, Central Headquarters located at (34 Broad Street), North Side Substation at (129 Southampton Road), and Little River Substation at (366 Little River Road). |
| FIRE AND RESCUE CALLS: | | The Fire Department responds to approximately 10,000 Fire and Rescue calls each year. For fire suppression and rescues, the Department maintains four engine companies, one Platform and one rescue truck. The Department provides for a wide variety of rescues including ice rescue, fire rescue, confined space rescue and auto extrication. |
| AMBULANCE SERVICES: | | Emergency calls and routine transports are provided for by our trained Emergency Medical Technician staff. All medical personnel are cross-trained as firefighter and are certified by the Massachusetts Office of Emergency Medical Services. Personnel respond to approximately 6,500 medical calls each year. Calls involve all types of emergency situations as well as routine non-emergency transports to/from area hospitals, nursing homes and other health care facilities. We maintain five fully equipped and certified ambulances. The Department now has Paramedics on staff and provides Advance Life Support for the City of Westfield and surrounding communities. |
| MUNICIPAL FIRE ALARMS: | | The Fire Alarm Division reviews and maintains fire alarm circuitry in commercial and municipal buildings. These alarm systems are connected into the Fire Department Communications Center along with the City's 911 emergency dispatch system. Alarms are received via a Radio Call Box system. This system does not rely on Municipal power or overhead wires to operate assuring receipt of alarm regardless of weather conditions. |
| FIRE SAFETY AND PREVENTION: | | The Department sponsors a fire safety and prevention program in local schools called S.A.F.E. - (Student Awareness of Fire Education). Educating youngsters on the dangers of fire and being safe around fire at early ages, has reduced the number of fires involving young people. We work closely with law enforcement officials and provide counseling and education to youngsters who cause unsafe fire situations. Our Fire Prevention office inspects and reviews buildings, homes and new construction for smoke detectors and other fire devices outlined by city ordinance and state regulations. |
| JUVENILE FIRESETTERS PROGRAM: | | The Juvenile Firesetters Intervention Program seeks to identify the motivations associated with fire setting with a focus on changing the behavior, and providing fire safety education for the child and family. Confidentiality is a top priority with the Westfield Fire Department Juvenile Firesetters Intervention Program. It is also the law. Assessment of your child may be obtained by calling Fire Department Headquarters at (413) 562-2329 and requesting to speak to the Deputy Chief in charge. The Deputy Chief will make arrangements to have a trained member of our team meet with you at a convenient place and time. |
