The Westfield Water Department had its beginnings in the year 1873 when the Massachusetts Legislature authorized the Town of Westfield to construct a reservoir in the Town of Montgomery. Since that time, the system has grown as Westfield has grown.

SOURCES
The City of Westfield now receives water from several different sources. The main source, the Granville Reservoir, supplies up to four million gallons per day of water to the city. All water from this source is filtered at the Sackett Filtration Plant which begin operation in May, 1994.

The city receives water from six (6) active wells. Well locations and capacity are as follows:

Well No. Location Pump Capacity (million gal/day)

Well #1 Off Holyoke Rd. 2.0 Well #2 Union St. 2.0 Well #3* Shaker Rd. 3.195 Well #4* Shaker Rd. 2.02 Well #5 Off Northwest Rd. 0.14 Well #6 Off Northwest Rd. 0.29 Well #7 Behind E.Mtn.C.Club 2.0 Well #8 Behind E. Mtn. C. Club 2.0

*Combined daily allowable withdrawl is 3.2 million gallons per day

Westfield is also authorized to withdraw up to 3.2 million gallons per day from the Springfield water system through an interconnection located off Shaker Road.

STORAGE
There are four (4) storage tanks in the system all constructed of pre-cast concrete. Total system storage volume is 11.7 million gallons.

DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM
The distribution system loops around the city and includes over two hundred (200) miles of water mains varying in size from four inches to twenty inches.

The system includes over one thousand six hundred (1,600) fire hydrants and ten thousand three hundred (10,300) services, all of which are metered. The average day demand in the system is now 5 MGD.

BOOSTER PUMP STATIONS
There are three (3) booster stations all located on the outskirts of the distribution system. The stations boost pressure to homes built in the higher elevations of the city.

WATERSHED
The department owns and maintains approximately five thousand eight hundred (5,800) acres of watershed property located in the towns of Granville and Montgomery. Timber in the watershed is harvested in a "Forestry Management Program" begun in 1983.

RATES
The metered water rate is $2.25 per 1,000 gallons used plus a minimum charge based on meter size. The annual fire protection fee is based on sprinkler main size and varies from $7.00 for a 3/4 inch line up to $1,250.00 for a 10 inch main. A $50.00 annual per private yard hydrant fee is also assessed.

BOARD OF WATER COMMISSIONERS
The Westfield Water Department and the city's water system are under the exclusive and entire charge of the Board of Water Commissioners. This three member Board is appointed by the Mayor subject to confirmation by the City Council.

Meetings
The Board of Water Commissioners meet on the first Tuesday of each month in City Hall, Room 201 at 7:00 PM. All meetings are open to the public and the public is encouraged to attend.

Main Office
The Water Department main office is located in Westfield City Hall, 59 Court Street, Room 103. Office hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday.
