THE CITY
Westfield is situated in the foothills of the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts and is located 99 miles west of Boston, 85 miles east of Albany and 35 miles north of Hartford. Westfield has the second largest land area in Massachusetts, 47 square miles. The city is the center of one of the most diverse economic bases in Massachusetts. Heavy manufacturing, high technology, professional services, mercantile enterprises, and the local airport all contribute to a vitality which is enhanced by the location within the city of Westfield State College. The city is managed by a Mayor- Council form of government with the responsibility for the schools entrusted to a seven-member, elected School Committee. The citizens of Westfield are deeply concerned about the quality of life and are striving to achieve both balanced growth and the best of true New England living. This spirit has brought people to the city who take an active interest in local government and who have consistently supported quality education.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE
Westfield is a PK-12 community school district with an elected 7-member school committee with the mayor serving as chairperson by the virtue of holding that office. Each member serves on an elected basis for a 4-year term.

The primary responsibility of the school committee is to formulate general policies reflecting the educational expectations of the community and adoption of the budget.

The school committee meets every first and third Monday at the Central Administration Office, 22 Ashley Street at 7:30 P.M. All of its meetings are televised and are open to the public, with the exception of executive sessions when legal or personnel matters are discussed.

PROGRAMS
Emphasis is placed on basic skills and individualized instruction. Westfield has a strong curriculum that is always being updated and reflects the academic content and standards of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. The Westfield Public Schools has made a commitment that all Westfield staff and students have access to technologies that will support the system's curriculum goals. A five year capital improvement plan is the basis of the funding for the technology plan. Profiles of individual programs and building schematics are available upon request. Westfield High School offers advanced dual courses at area colleges. Westfield has its own 9-12 Vocational Technical High School offering 14 programs. An Early Childhood Program for pre-kindergarten students is conducted at Fort Meadow School. Our Special Services Department and ESL/ELL Department provide services according to all Massachusetts rules and regulations. Parent-Teacher groups and advisory committees are formulated at each school. Schools are site-based managed and a School Improvement Council consisting of administrators, teachers and parents exists in every school.
