Water Resources
Overview
The Westfield Water Resources Department was established in 2004 through an ordinance adopted by the Westfield City Council. This ordinance combined the city's water and wastewater departments into one department operating under the governance of the Westfield Board of Water Commissioners.

The mission of the Water Resources Department is to protect and enhance the health and economic stability of the City of Westfield and its residents through the provision of clean drinking water and proper treatment of wastewater. The department is committed to providing reliable drinking water and wastewater service with high quality customer service and at a reasonable cost and in an environmentally sensitive manner.

Drinking Water Division
The department's drinking water division is responsible for producing and delivering drinking water that meets or exceeds all federal and state standards. This division owns and operates:
  • More than 220 miles of underground piping
  • 2 drinking water treatment facilities
  • 2 reservoir watersheds
  • 4 booster pumping stations
  • 7 dams
  • 8 groundwater wells

This system serves over 11,000 residential and commercial customer connections.

Wastewater Division

The department's Wastewater Division protects water quality and prevents pollution by providing wastewater treatment for the city's more than 5,000 wastewater customers. This division operates the city's six million gallon per day wastewater facility as well as 12 booster pumping facilities.

The division meets its EPA and MA DEP permit limits at our treatment plant through operator vigilance and system maintenance and an active industrial pre-treatment program. For more information, see the Understanding Wastewater Pamphlet.

Rain Barrel Program
The City of Westfield Water Resources Department and Public Works Departments have partnered with the Great American Rain Barrel Company in Hyde Park, MA to offer rain barrels to residents as part of a community wide water conservation program and storm water management program. See the Rain Barrel Program flyer for more details and information on how to order.
